Objectifs : The Master in Linguistic and Literary Studies is intended for students who hold a Licence degree in the
English Language and Literature. It provides them with basic knowledge about major trends and theories in
the study of language and literature. It aims to reinforce and refine their language skills by exposing them to
and training them in the analysis, and evaluation of different types of discourse, literary and non-literary.
In the course of their master’s studies, participants will be trained to read, analyze and evaluate linguistic and
literary texts. They will develop their argumentative abilities and their logical reasoning. They will be trained
to apply research methods to their own studies. They will also be prepared to carry on their studies in any
field related to the English language, such as literary studies, linguistic studies, cultural studies, translation
and education.
The proposed Master in Linguistic and Literary Studies will provide students with solid theoretical and
methodological foundations for understanding the way language functions with the following objectives:
- to provide students with a basic knowledge of the main theoretical approaches to the study of linguistic and
literary texts;
- to refine students’ language skills and critical reasoning necessary for reading, analyzing, and evaluating
different types of discourse;
- to develop students’ skills of research, with a focus on methodology, data collection, synthesis and
evaluation;
-to introduce students to the main approaches and concepts of translation theory, and to train them to translate
texts from different sources (English, Arabic and French languages);
- to familiarize students with the main approaches to English language teaching, to train to adapt, plan
lessons and language activities, and to have some language teaching practice.
By the end of their MA studies students will have developed a good knowledge of the English language,
which will allow them to adapt it to any work such as teaching, doing translation work, working at
advertising agencies, newspaper companies, working at the public sector.
They can also carry on their studies at the doctorate level and do more research, and eventually take up
teaching positions at the university.
